Sustainability
Dunamaise Arts Centre has a long-standing commitment to greening the arts and making every effort to being eco conscious in all aspects of our work.
Since 2009, our Technical Manager Nick Anton has been leading the team to investigate ways to save energy across our building and activities, from using recycled paper to managing water use. Read more about our steps towards a greener arts centre and the results so far.
Reducing our carbon footprint together
- Using crockery or keep-cups instead of paper cups
- Actively recycling
- Printing only when necessary; using both sides of pages and re-using past event posters for office printing
- Requesting reduced quantities of printed posters & fliers from event teams
- Updating lighting to LED with sensor lighting in key areas
- Switching from Oil to Gas heating
- Reducing water usage and domestic waste
- Replacing single use technical materials with more sustainable items
- Go Paperless. Download your e-ticket in advance and present your tickets to be scanned on your phone. Staff will help you learn how to do this.
- Swap, don’t shop. We have access to a Book Swap shelf in our Café and host artist led clothes swap events.
- Car pool or use transport links to get here.
Biodiversity
We have swift boxes and a caller fitted to the side of the building in conjunction with the Heritage Office of Laois Co.Co. and Birdwatch Ireland.
Success Story
We have taken the BER of Dunamaise Arts Centre up to a B1, which is very high for a historic building and we hope to improve this further.
Our greening plans continue - we are looking at large scale projects like Solar PV panels to generate electricity; the small things are important too. A degree less on your own heating, having a Keep Cup for your coffee, cycling to work and buying locally sourced goods all go towards a brighter future for us all.
