Jim, a Traveller father, is struggling to cope with the suicide of his 23-year-old son, becoming Isolated from other family members and misusing alcohol.
Accompany Jim on an emotional roller-coaster ride, as he articulates loving memories of his son, his fears for the well-being of his other children, the turmoil that has developed in his relationship with his wife, his anger at God, and his agonising questions about whether there was something he could have done to prevent his son’s death.
To support audiences, following this performance of Magpies on the Pylon, Michael Collins will be joined on stage for a facilitated Q&A and discussion about the sensitive, and some might say taboo, subject of suicide within the Traveller community.
Although this is a challenging portrayal of one man’s grief and misunderstanding, playwright and actor Michael Collins presentation of Magpies On The Pylon offers an opportunity for safe and supported reflection, discussion and support around its delicate subject matter (mental health, alcoholism, suicide).
With members of Laois Traveller Action Group and local professional services who will have information stalls in the foyer on the night, and take part in discussions.
